The Five Devils

Director: Léa Mysius
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.5

Eight-year-old Vicky (Sally Dramé), whose parents Joanne (Adèle Exarchopoulos) and Jimmy (Moustapha Mbengue) aren't happy with each other, has a superhuman sense of smell and can put together concoctions that, when inhaled, transport her to the past ... which is how she finds out about the connection with Jimmy's sister Julia (Swala Emati).  The premise itself is intriguing (a kid sorcerer) and it asks the relevant question of "if we had the ability to see into our mother and father's respective pasts before we were born in order to understand them better, should we?" ... but then it doesn't have anywhere to go with it, instead turning it into a messy LGBTQ+ love triangle (although at least it explains why Julia is referred to as a pyromaniac).  The title suggests there are five devils, but there's only one focused on here: jealousy.  And I'm not sure a child can properly comprehend what that entails....
