Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Director:  Howard Hawks
Year Released:  1953
Rating:  2.0

This movie exists somewhere between exploitation (Monroe and Russell are gawked at by every male within a mile radius) and empowerment (Monroe and Russell make said men look like drooling idiots) - Monroe is marrying some effeminate millionaire, but tempted along the way by countless other men (most older) with fat wallets; Russell is her friend and advisor, though her superficial desire is for good looks, not money. Both settle on diamonds in the end (in wonderfully-choreographed dance sequences), and consumerism - not love or romance or anything stupid like that - saves the day.
