Recovering addict Riley (Odessa A'zion) and her boyfriend Colin (Adam Faison) "stumble upon" a mysterious mechanical box that she (predictably) fiddles around with which accidentally gets her brother Matt (Brandon Flynn) "taken" by beings called Cenobites - the search for him leads her and associates to the mansion of multi-millionaire Voight (Goran Višnjić), who's doing research into the supernatural.  I have similar issues with this "reboot" as I did with Clive Barker's original: there isn't much (if anything) of a "story" and sympathy with the human characters is weak when compared to the icky appearance of the villains (inspired by the world of BDSM), who you're just supposed to sit and be freaked out by (the Chatterer, who always unnerved me as a kid, also shows up).  There have (predictably) been complaints about casting a female (Jamie Clayton) to play Cenobite leader "Pinhead" (officially listed as "The Priest") - but even Doug Bradley, who originated the role, loved the changes they made so whiners can piss off: why shouldn't women be as capable as men in reveling in the suffering of others?  Isn't that true equality?
