Meet Cute

Director: Alex Lehmann
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.5

For reasons only she can possibly understand, New Yorker Sheila (Kaley Cuoco) abuses a "time machine" (disguised as a tanning bed) found in the back of a nail salon to keep reliving the same exact day where she spends "the perfect evening" with freelance graphic designer Gary (Pete Davidson), the night ends ... and then she has to kill off the clone she made.  It's supposed to be this cutesy rom-com but it's fundamentally demented: it expends too much effort contemplating its setup (it's as if Christopher Nolan got too tipsy on gimlets and tried to write something "light"), and the lengths Sheila goes to "change" Gary in order for him to be "the ideal partner" (including "altering" his own personal history) is completely insane.  Both leads are pretty charming together - it helps that they have experience with sitcom-ish banter - and they help distract from the odious premise.  Contemplate this: if Kanye West gained access to that portal, can anyone imagine what he'd do to Pete?
