Hatching

Director: Hanna Bergholm
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.0

Pre-teen Tinja (Siiri Solalinna) is growing up in less-than-ideal circumstances: her vlogger Mother (Sophia Heikkilä) - who tries to convince her viewers she has the "ideal homelife" - is openly cheating on her milquetoast Father (Jani Volanen) and is forcing her to do gymnastics, which she's not a natural at ... and one day she finds an egg outside, takes it inside and protects it only for it to hatch and turn out to be what looks like a mutated vulture, which she names Alli.  The "symbolism" gets quite out of hand with this feature debut from Berghold: clearly the egg/creature represents Tinja's anxiety growing up and on her path to becoming a "woman" (there's a scene where her Father thinks she's having her first period), but that's about where the ideas stop.  The ending is a little abrupt, too: sure, they're flawed, but this family isn't so abusive they deserved to be massacred.
