Aspiring student Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei) - who's studying literature - goes to the doctor with some abdominal complains and finds out she's pregnant - despite claiming she never had sexual intercourse - and then has a hard time getting rid of it.  Based on Annie Ernaux's memoir, it's a little distant (Anne isn't exactly a chatterbox) and vague (for the first half hour I kept wondering if it was some Biblical allegory), and, as with Hittman's 2020 film Never Rarely Sometimes Always, I find it a little morally and ethically uncomfortable "rooting" for someone to "wipe out" a future life.  That being said, the release of this movie couldn't come at a more opportune time: a draft memo (signed by Justice Samuel Alito) was "leaked" just a few weeks ago about the possibility of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, which allowed for women to receive safe medical treatment for unwanted pregnancies.  If that happened, we'd return to inhuman back alley procedures using primitive means that threaten the life of the woman, which is not acceptable in a civilized society: it's all a part of the ongoing War on Women™ by an almost exclusively white gerontocracy.  In the words of Kevin Parker, "Feels like we only go backwards, darling."
