Love Story

Director: Arthur Hiller
Year Released: 1970
Rating: 1.5

Wait - this is love? Riiiight. I never read Erich Segal's book, but I don't care much for the movie version, which features what I believe to be an awful performance by Ali McGraw as the poor Radcliffe girl who falls for rich Harvard man Ryan O'Neal. As a matter of fact, I never really bought their whole 'meeting' and 'coming together,' her dialogue - penned by Segal himself - a poor excuse for wit (sentences end with her taunting O'Neal by calling him 'preppie'). The two wise men of the picture - McGraw's father (John Marley) and O'Neal's (Ray Milland) - are at their best here, but both are given limited screen time. Now, Monty Clift and that other guy dueling in Red River ... that was love.
