Dolemite Is My Name

Director: Craig Brewer
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 1.0

Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy) can't get his records played on the radio, so he reinvents himself as a foul-mouthed comedian named Dolemite (who acts like a pimp) and then later on finances his own movie with him as the star (even though he has no idea how a film is actually made).  The template for this is 2017's The Disaster Artist (about Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero making The Room), which was another bad movie that got trashed by the critics but the audiences enjoyed laughing at (not with), and this one's idea of "humor" is saying "motherfucker" at the end (or middle, or beginning) of every sentence: if you think that's rib-ticklingly smart comedy, have a blast.  Otherwise, it's a mediocre biopic that bashes high art and celebrates ostentatiousness ... but Moore did influence the development of rap, so we have to thank (or curse) him for that.  I imagine Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew was taking notes.
