Set It Up

Director:  Claire Scanlon
Year Released:  2018
Rating:  1.0

Two beaten-down personal assistants, Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell), who are controlled by their tyrannical (and fickle) employers Kirsten (Lucy Liu) and Rick (Taye Diggs), put their heads together to set their bosses up on a date and hopefully fall in love, just so they can get some peace and quiet in the office (and more free time for themselves). It acknowledges it's a "meet cute" setup, but drawing attention to the pedestrian framework doesn't make it go down any easier - making matters worse is the overuse of "bawdy" jokes (ha ha, girl holes and pee pees) by someone with a tin ear for one-liners. Two side characters add some flavor: Tituss Burgess as a pleasingly creepy maintenance worker and SNL vet Pete Davidson as Charlie's gay roommate (although the script reminds you he's a homosexual in every scene he's in, as if that's the only part of his personality worth noting).
