Lovers, The

Director:  Azazel Jacobs
Year Released:  2017
Rating:  1.0

Michael (Tracy Letts) and Mary (Debra Winger), trapped in a stale marriage with each other, are both having affairs - he with dancer Lucy (Melora Walters), she with writer Robert (Aidan Gillen) - but hesitant to divorce ... when their son (Tyler Ross) returns home on break from college with his girlfriend (Jessica Sula), he helps topple the whole sham. There isn't much to this unhappy couple movie, where everything about it is dreadfully underwritten - it never bothers detailing what caused things to go so very wrong, nor does it explore the back stories or personalities of its two central figures - so I'm going to freestyle and suggest it's really about opposing views about fidelity between Generation X (the 'adults') and Generation Z (Ross and Sula) and, considering the final few shots, how some relationships 'work best' as brief day-time flings instead of full-time commitments (feel free to recoil in disgust if you so choose). It looks like the French do not have a monopoly on l'amour fou, after all....
