Great McGinty, The

Director:  Preston Sturges
Year Released:  1940
Rating:  3.0

It begins like a less-than-weird Gilda, with well to do Akim Tamiroff discovering truculent bum McGinty (Brian Donlevy) and offering to "save" him by giving him a job and a new life (as a debt collector/enforcer). The first and last acts save the picture from a disastrous middle, where the reformed McGinty is forced to marry, getting him involved in an unnecessary - and poorly constructed - love-triangle between his new wife and her former boyfriend. Tamiroff and William Demarest may be two of the greatest supporting actors in the history of film.
