At the Circus

Director:  Edward Buzzell
Year Released:  1939
Rating:  3.0

A dignified letdown from the Marx Bros., this comes oh-so-close to being recommendable, but falls short in several regards. As always, the core male-female relationship (propelled further along by the brothers, who lend a 'helping hand') is completely phony - it's only in there as a prerequisite - and the songs get on your nerves, but some moments do work, like the one with Groucho and Chico trying to get information out of a mustachioed midget (with a room that looks like a doll house). How can you possibly hate anything that has Harpo riding an ostrich? Groucho would have made a fantastic lawyer had he changed career paths.
