Outcast girl punks Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) and Klara (Mira Grosin) in early 80's Sweden recruit skilled Christian guitarist Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne) in order to form a band, learn their instruments and basically have fun (it helps that their parents are supportive of their interests and outré hairdos). The empathy Moodysson has for his very young female characters is more than evident - he had the same kind of understanding for the leads of Show Me Love back in the beginning of his career - and his willingness to let girls-be-girls and joke around lends it a refreshing air of naturalism. It's the kind of kid-positive, girl-positive, good-feeling Us-Against the-Civilized-World movie that's impossible to frown upon (Hollywood remake to no doubt follow). As for gym class: it's worthy of hate.
