The Swimming Pool

Director: Jacques Deray
Year Released: 1969
Rating: 2.0

A writer (Alain Delon) and his girlfriend (Romy Schneider) pass time at their summer villa making love and swimming, but soon an old lover of hers/old friend of his arrives (Maurice Ronet), accompanied by his gawky 18-year-old daughter (Jane Birkin, weighing less than a handbag). You can figure out what's going to happen immediately (he's Delon ... he doesn't turn down teenagers), but this isn't so apparent to Deray, who takes an already unimaginative, frills-free premise and turns it into a mannered chore, complete with an unsatisfying ending. Delon gives it just the right amount of indifference and he and Schneider (both real-life pals) have marvelous chemistry together - it's a shame their interpersonal magic is wasted.
