Girl on a Motorcycle, The

Director:  Jack Cardiff
Year Released:  1968
Rating:  0.5

Unhappy Rebecca (Marianne Faithfull) ditches her 'weak' schoolteacher husband, dons a leather outfit and hops on a motorcycle her former lover (Alain Delon) gave her to ride back to him, along the way having fantasies about their sexual exploits together - she (predictably) gets into a crash (and dies) on the way there as a kind of moral against attempting to break one's marital vows. Faithfull's voice-over sounds like it's straight out of a confused high school girl's diary, and Cardiff is liberal with the color scheme and camerawork, jostling it to and fro when he isn't carefree with some gaudy colors, though mostly this is all an amateurish excuse to ogle her naked body (when one officer does his professional duty and doesn't pat her fanny, she immediately wonders if he's gay ... what a sharp deduction). Faithfull, in a 2013 interview with the Guardian, said, "It's a completely phony, silly film. But I know a lot of people love it." Precisely ... but those that love it probably just love her fanny.
