The Dead

Director: John Huston
Year Released: 1987
Rating: 1.0

Useless little trifle, really: after a rather ordinary dinner party in which a family dines, drinks and tells stories, one of the couples leaves and the woman (Anjelica Huston) mourns the unexpected death of a man she once loved ... and that's pretty much it. Maintaining the slightest bit of interest in these cardboard figures - with their endless ponderings on life - is a formidable challenge; the only bit of real "drama" is in the last ten minutes, and that comes from out of nowhere. It was lifted from the Joyce work Dubliners - when, by the way, will filmmakers learn to leave his writings alone?
