Go West

Director:  Buster Keaton
Year Released:  1925
Rating:  3.5

Pleasant oddity in the Keaton oeuvre has ol' Stone Face going to work on a ranch, becoming best friends with a cow named Brown Eyes and eventually leading a whole herd through downtown Los Angeles to the slaughterhouse. What really makes this so very charming is the connection Keaton forms with Brown Eyes (instead of any other human being); his character is named "Friendless," which is so very fitting. The ending, too, is quite the hoot, as the traditional boy-kisses-girl ending is replaced by Buster buying his (female) cow and riding off with her in a car: as Joe E. Brown said, "Nobody's perfect."
