This Means War

Director: McG
Year Released: 2012
Rating: 2.0

CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) stationed in Los Angeles both fall for the same exact woman (Reese Witherspoon) and try to outwit each other for her affections - elsewhere, a terrorist is lurking and waiting to knock off both of them (but that's a side point, really). The gimmicky, corny script is played out for the joke it is, which is certainly all well and good - Pine and Hardy don't take it very seriously, and the homoerotic tension between their characters makes for some nice subtext to lend it a smidgeon of complexity (and Chelsea Handler's sassy gay-friendly friend is generally good for a chuckle). McG, best known for his whiz-bang approach to 'filmmaking,' keeps things relatively under control, which means it doesn't look like a 90-minute music video.
