They Might Be Giants

Hooray, another cinematic foray into psychological unhealthiness! A former judge (George C. Scott) who, after the death of his wife, comes to believe he's actually Sherlock Holmes and traipses around Manhattan with his psychiatrist, Dr. Watson (Joanne Woodward), to hunt his Moriarty ... who may or may not exist. Scott plays the role with absolute conviction, though it's unclear how and why a psychiatrist as presumably intelligent as Woodward's would ever fall into such folly - the final scene suggests that it's all one big, downward slope for both characters into utter madness, meaning they are both destined for the loony bin (how lovely). The inane fight between some mentally ... disadvantaged individuals and the police at a Pathmark grocery store is awkward and silly.
