The Match Factory Girl

Director: Aki Kaurismäki
Year Released: 1990
Rating: 2.0

A neglected, despondent assembly line worker reaches her limit when the older man that impregnates her tells her she should abort the baby. It's a (short) movie about how the combination of oppressive working conditions and the cruel social world can drive someone mad, but to be honest, the idea's just too familiar - Kaurismäki clearly finds the idea darkly funny, but giving in to nihilism as a solution is just lazy thinking. And speaking of lazy thinking: rat poison? Come on, girl: you have plenty of free time, come up with something to at least make the police think for a minute.
