Matador

Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Year Released: 1986
Rating: 3.0

Arthouse soap opera by Almodóvar is actually one of his daffier movies because it's played out so seriously (even though everyone in it is a little nuts): protégé to a retired bullfighter (Antonio Banderas) claims he murdered several people, but they were actually murdered by the woman who also happens to be his lawyer (?) - meanwhile, this loon lawyer has her eyes on the retired bullfighter, as the two of them have a sexual obsession with blood and death. On top of all this business, the entire plot is actually a metaphor for the process of (actual) bullfighting. Only Pedro could have pulled this off as well as he did, though his high camp won't work for all viewers and even I had trouble accepting Banderas' sudden development of telepathic abilities in the third act (since when could vertigo develop into ESP?).
