The Devil Wears Prada

Director: David Frankel
Year Released: 2006
Rating: 2.0

Standard chick-flick fare based on the absurdly popular novel - with an absurdly catchy title (I wonder if the Prada people welcomed the association or not?) - about life in the fashion industry, helmed largely by magazine chief/fashionista Meryl Streep in a role that could have very easily been played by Glenn Close. Anne Hathaway's dull overachiever gets transformed into a Gucci little piggy but retains her sense of self in a business full of frauds - the love/hate relationship with fashion is more than apparent (it can't be too harsh - Mr. Valentino makes an appearance) - but with a script this safe and obvious (fish-out-of-water, anyone?) and predictable it's up to Streep, Stanley Tucci and Zooey-esque scene-stealer Emily Blunt to provide their own kind of glimmering bling as suitable distraction. Good casting can make up for so much.
