Moody but vapid 'thriller' about a school teacher (Stéphane Audran) who starts dating a butcher of meat, but turns out to also be a butcher of people (such a temptation, I know). The 'complexity' is intended to reside within Audran's character - it's more or less about how far a woman will rationalize her relationship with a man she knows has 'issues' - and less in the murderer, who's one-dimensional. Chabrol's always been fascinated with Hitchcock, and though he's got the same skills as the Master, the script is unacceptably lightweight.
