The Island

Director: Michael Bay
Year Released: 2005
Rating: 1.5

Positively moronic combination of virtually every sci-fi movie Bay's ever seen - including Logan's Run, The Matrix, Brave New World, 1984, THX 1138 and so forth - then drained of all life, energy and originality, not to mention terribly miscast (Scarlett Johansson: the face of someone collecting a paycheck). Bay knows his way around a highway action scene - which just so happens to be the film's bravura moment (the same way it was in The Matrix Reloaded) - but basic storytelling is still a conundrum, and the man certainly has no interest in dialogue, character development or anything that does not explode. This deserved to melt at the box office.
