Viridiana

Director: Luis Buñuel

Rating: 1.5

One-note drama - like Nazarin - about a woman (Silvia Pinal) who, once removed from the nunnery, gets hit on by every man that meets her (to quote Baudrillard, "There is no aphrodisiac like innocence."). This is basically a generic send-up of the Marquis de Sade's The Misfortune of Virtue, with a second half that drifts off-focus from the deflowered heroine to a group of cripples who stage their own version of the Last Supper, complete with madcap conclusion, which is more of a sign of desperation and intentional bad taste than a solid critique of the Church. Lame as satire, lame as drama.
