Animal Love

Director:  Ulrich Seidl
Year Released:  1995
Rating:  0.5

Seidl gathers up some vagabond kooks and shows them obsessing over their pets in this dubious "documentary" that, according to the notes on the box, is intended to be some kind of important statement about modern society and hermetic behavior. Maybe it's just me, but arranging sad looking individuals symmetrically in your camera frame and having them fondle their animals or recite lines isn't exactly "truthful" - in fact, Seidl's methods are so questionable that I can't tell if the scene where the one dog attacks another while walking down the street was planned or not. The film exists to have you laugh at these people who abandon interpersonal communication and treat their pets as friends, lovers or children, and that's it.
