The Times of Harvey Milk

Director: Robert Epstein
Year Released: 1984
Rating: 3.0

Taut documentary about the life of late San Francisco politician/activist Harvey Milk and his murder (as well as the death of Mayor Moscone) by deeply disturbed councilman Dan White. It's cleverly constructed for maximum impact - it wants desperately to evoke sympathy for the good-natured and brave Milk and completely vilify White (by more or less reducing him to a homophobe, which may or may not have been the case) - but is true to its subject, austere in its support of equal rights for all people and certainly deserving of its Academy Award for Best Documentary.
