Ideal Husband, An

Director: Oliver Parker
Year Released: 1999
Rating: 2.5

I'm sure that when Oscar Wilde wrote this play oh ... a little while ago it was funny and appropriate and enlightening. But not all things that are old can successfully be adapted for a completely different generation. Julianne Moore, playing the prissy, Machiavellian manipulator, is so wooden you'd think the carpenter Giuseppe made her in his workshop. Not much more can be said about an amazingly subdued Cate Blanchett or a flat, one-dimensional Jeremy Northam. Everett and Minnie Driver seem to sparkle in every scene they're together, and a truly ideal movie would be with just those two. Damn Shakespeare in Love for making Hollywood resurrect ancient stories.
