Enjoyable picture from Minnelli and Gene Kelly that may not be the best musical ever made, but is certainly one of the most entertaining; the eighteen minute final interpretive dance by Kelly through the landscapes of French painters is undoubtedly impressive (although his song-and-dance never almost never disappoint) and a must-see. No one ever confused Kelly or co-star Leslie Caron (all teeth and tip-toes) for being actors - and this sort of thing doesn't have the narrative of Cabaret or The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - but it works most of the time, and that's all you can ask for.
