Breaker Morant
Director: Bruce Beresford
Year Released: 1979
Rating: 1.5
True story of soldiers court-martialed and executed for purely political reasons; it's based on a stage play and it shows, since a good deal of the film takes place in one dank little room for the trial. Jewison's A Soldier's Story is a lot similar - details about the characters and the 'truth' are revealed slowly through flashbacks - and, like that film, this one is just as passionately dull, preaching morality and ethics instead of working on the development of fascinating characters. It's too formal, rigid and unapproachable to make for brilliant cinema or capitalize on its 'unjust' ending, which is intended to infuriate and anger the audience.
