Monsoon Wedding
Director: Mira Nair
Year Released: 2001
Rating: 1.5
Familiar wedding film – this time it's an Indian family instead of a Greek one – that plays it safe most of the way through, ushering out the standards (the bride's second thoughts, the father's wallet is hurting) until it approaches the incest subplot, which is very much out of place. The English-Indian language hybrid gets irritating quickly – why not stick to one? – although the inclusion of English (and the various references to America, like Sweet 'n Low and New York City) is probably just to cater to American audiences. Plus, seeing the extreme trouble these folks put themselves through to put on such an event, it's making me re-think the whole costly, time-consuming enterprise myself – if I were to make a film of my own marriage, it would be My Borderline Anorexic Italian Elopement. No one's invited; relatives will get a flyer in the mail.
