Clean and Sober (1988) review

Following an all-night coke binge, real estate salesman Daryl Poynter (Michael Keaton) wakes up with an unresponsive woman in his bed, so he checks himself into a rehabilitation facility and clashes with his counselor Craig (Morgan Freeman) because he doesn't take the treatment seriously, but his sponsor Richard (M. Emmet Walsh) tries to help him, and when he's released he attempts to reconnect with fellow addict Charlie (Kathy Baker), who's in an abusive relationship.  The topic is relevant today - especially with so many individuals battling addiction to fentanyl (and other substances) - and might even be timeless (until we figure out how to rewire the brain), but the presentation is aggressively grim (and smoky), Daryl's "turnaround" from junkie to functional human is entirely too abrupt and the movie ends on a cheap shot, with Baker's fragile foundry worker getting killed in a car accident.  It also (conveniently) "forgets" to revisit the story involving the young lady in the beginning, and Daryl never pays the price for that "mistake."
