Sweetness

Director: Emma Higgins
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 1.0

Motherless teen Rylee Hill (Kate Hallett) lives with her father Ron (Justin Chatwin), a cop, and fantasizes about Payton Adler (Herman Tømmeraas), the lead singer of the rock band Floorplan, so when her and her friend Sidney (Aya Furukawa) go to one of their concerts, Rylee sticks around to meet him after the show, he accidentally hits her with a car, he tries to drive her home and she ends up handcuffing him to her bed to "help" him kick his drug addiction.  For Higgins (in her feature debut), this is a Dark, Twisted Young Girl fantasy in which an outcast feels she can "save" her "idol" but only manages to ruin everyone in her vicinity: the "twists" are beguiling, it never frees itself from its influences and the film school affectations are annoying.  The last scene, which is presumably a Canadian variation on American Psycho, isn't quite as sinister as it should have been, and maybe Officer Ron and his colleagues down at the station needed to brush up on their detective skills.
