52 Pick-Up

Director: John Frankenheimer
Year Released: 1986
Rating: 2.0

Steel manufacturing tycoon Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider), whose spouse Barbara (Ann-Margret) is an aspiring councilwoman in the state of California, finds himself blackmailed by cackling porno director Alan Raimy (John Glover) and his minions over an affair he had with exotic dancer Cynthia (Kelly Preston) - when he refuses to pay their ransom, they murder Cynthia and frame him.  Famed novelist Elmore Leonard co-wrote the screenplay for this, which is based on his own book, but the characters could have used a lot more development, it's missing Leonard's trademark ear for smart dialogue and, aside from Barbara, there's no one halfway decent to root for: "hero" Harry is, after all, a capitalist and an adulterer.  It does deserve a smidge of credit for remaining consistently scuzzy and unapologetically misogynistic the entire way through: it was made in the mid-80's although it would have fit right in with nastier side of 70's cinema.
