The Rescuers (1977) review

Members of the Rescue Aid Society - a collection of talking mice that come from all over the globe - meet in the United Nations building in New York City and unveil a letter stuffed into a glass bottle that was written by a little girl named Penny (voiced by Michelle Stacy) who's living at the Morningside Orphanage and says she's scared and in danger, so Hungarian ambassador Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor) and superstitious custodian Bernard (Bob Newhart) head out to look for her and then encounter the wicked Madame Medusa (Geraldine Page), who's searching for the elusive Devil's Eye diamond.  As an animated movie made exclusively for children (it has a G-rating) it's not really that exciting and mostly reliant on side characters, such as elderly feline Rufus (John McIntire) and doltish albatross Orville (Jim Jordan), for some 'personality' ... and then it begs for audience pity when it has Penny weeping constantly (because no one wants to adopt her).  Disney completists might find something to treasure here, but the only thing I found curious about it is how chugging hooch is the "magical antidote" everyone needs to spring to life: those overworked Nine Old Men were definitely taking a few sips....
