Mantrap (1926) review

Frustrated by his clientele of excitable women seeking a divorce, attorney Ralph Prescott (Percy Marmont) is convinced by his pal (and hosiery salesman) Woodbury (Eugene Pallette) to take a vacation with him to Canada - while there, Ralph meets and spends time with shop owner and outdoorsman Joe Easter (Ernest Torrence) and his wife Alverna (Clara Bow), except Alverna is unhappy and planning her escape to Minneapolis.  Screenwriters Ethel Doherty and Adelaide Heilbron (with titles by George Marion Jr.) try trimming down Sinclair Lewis' novel and turning it into a comedy, but it's all achingly predictable and solely reliant on the audience finding Alverna's incessant flirting and manipulative behavior to be somehow endearing.  Ms. Bow, who was a major on-screen success in the twenties, is certainly cute although looks alone aren't enough: Prescott flees back to New York and Joe is left tolerating her child-like antics.
