Wake Up Dead Man

Director: Rian Johnson
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 2.0

Former boxer Rev. Jud (Josh O'Connor) - who once killed a man in the ring and sought atonement by joining the priesthood - is sent to a small church in Chimney Rock, New York led by Monsignor Wicks (Josh Brolin) that is losing members because of Wicks' abrasive personality, but when Wicks is murdered during service, Jud is considered the main suspect, which is where famed private investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) steps in and has to piece it together.  While the cast of characters - which includes administrative assistant Martha (Glenn Close), groundskeeper Samson (Thomas Haden Church), writer Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), ambitious politician Cy (Daryl McCormack), handicapped cellist Simone (Cailee Spaeny), edgy lawyer Vera (Kerry Washington) and physician Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner) - is pleasantly varied, the story becomes increasingly preposterous the longer it's allowed to go on, and Johnson's not exactly known for being succinct.  Another problem with it has to do with the treatment of religion and spirituality - although Jud struggles with his faith (and guilt), the movie sides with Blanc's "proud heretic," and the director clearly has a flippant attitude regarding Catholicism and belief in a higher power.  The real mystery, however, is how I can personally locate these so-called "feminist Marxist whores."  Where do they meet?  Do they have a Discord I can join?
