Rec (2007) review

In the fine city of Barcelona, news reporter Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) and her (mostly unseen) camera operator Pablo (Pablo Rosso) are doing a report on the local firefighters when a call comes in that an elderly woman in an apartment complex has gone berserk, but once they arrive at the scene it seems as if the lady is "infected" ... and then the authorities quarantine the area so no one can leave.  As a "found footage" movie that uses practical effects, non-actors and was shot in a real building (which apparently became a tourist destination following the film's success), this is actually a very effective horror feature that's full of unpredictable moments, and proof you don't need an elaborate setup and loads of green screen and digital technology to make the audience squirm, and the last sequence (recorded with night vision) is especially unnerving (and also proves the cameraperson isn't always "safe" from danger).  My only major qualm is that oftentimes it's a little too shaky and hard to figure out what's happening, although if I was in a similar situation someone nearby would have to regularly pop Xanax into my mouth.
