The Perfect Neighbor
Director: Geeta Gandbhir
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 3.0
Using mostly footage recorded by Axon body cameras that are worn by police officers, director Gandbhir reassembles the disputes between Susan Lorincz and her neighbors in Marion Country as Susan repeatedly makes emergency phone calls claiming the local children are trespassing on her property and "leaving their junk" near her residence ... and how the issues escalate to the point where Lorincz shoots and kills Ajike Owens (a mother of four), stating that she was "fearing for her life" (and clearly aware of Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law). To its credit, this does try hard to be objective and only shows what the first responders witness, but as time goes on it becomes quite clear Lorincz is not mentally well and - this is based on my own personal experience - little ones have a tendency of becoming more annoying and defiant when they know it bothers you (it's one of their "special talents"). The whole scenario is heartbreaking and purposely unnerving - it's rare that a documentary actually gets me to pity the police - although it's missing necessary third-party statements from experts and family members: what is Susan's real back story, since she claims she's a doctor? Why didn't she just pack up her few belongings and move out of the rental (it's obvious she despises non-Caucasians)? And wouldn't social workers have helped mediate the situation better than law enforcement?
