Meeting With Pol Pot

Director: Rithy Panh
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.0

Journalists Lise (Irène Jacob) and Alain (Grégoire Colin) as well as photographer Paul (Cyril Gueï) fly to "Democratic Kampuchea" (currently Cambodia) for the opportunity to document how their "fair society" works under the control of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot, but they quickly discover dead bodies in the fields and Paul, who has been taking pictures of the atrocities, goes missing ... and then the remaining two meet Brother #1 himself (voiced by the filmmaker).  While it's of historical importance that Panh, who was born in Phnom Penh and managed to survive the genocide, continues making these films about what his native country endured, sadly this 'fictionalized' story is sorely lacking in dramatic tension - the carved wooden figures (a trademark of his) are a nice touch, but the human characters aren't much more developed.  Anyone with a vague awareness of what transpired will find nothing here to heighten their understanding or even provide important tidbits of new information, and the sole takeaway is that Stalin and Mao aren't role models.
