The Conjuring: Last Rites
Director: Michael Chaves
Year Released: 2025
Rating: 2.0
"Paranormal investigators" Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are preparing to marry off their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) to former police officer Tony (Ben Hardy) when they get pulled out of semi-retirement to cover "one last case" in West Pittston, PA in which an old mirror gifted to Heather Smurl (Kíla Lord Cassidy) has apparently unleashed evil spirits in her childhood home. As with previous entries in this series, both Wilson and Farmiga are quite good - they know how to properly 'play' the material - except this movie, which is presumably the concluding chapter for their characters, is not only unsurprising (particularly if you've watched the others) but entirely too leisurely-paced: sure, there are a couple of "boo" moments (such as a young lady spewing blood into a sink), and yet the film sometimes mostly behaves like it's a suburban drama from the 1980's. Director Chaves throws in a few really nice shots (Judy in a changing room with multiple mirrors is well done), although I can't say much positive about the 'dramatic showdown' with that frantically rotating "cursed object."
