Relay
Director: David Mackenzie
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 1.5
Biotech researcher Sarah Grant (Lily James) has documentation that proves her employer, Cybo Sementis, is hiding from the public (and their investors) information regarding their newly-designed wheat product and its dangerous side-effects, so she's given the number for a telephone relay service that connects her to fixer (and recovering alcoholic) Ash (Riz Ahmed) who helps her try to "negotiate" with them, but the company has already hired a team - consisting of Dawson (Sam Worthington), Rosetti (Willa Fitzgerald) and several others - to hunt her down. Getting both Riz and Ms. James as the leads is a wise move - they are outstanding performers - except this script (by Justin Piasecki) doesn't stand up to the slightest amount of close examination with its multiple plot holes and then there's a major rug pull at the conclusion that only makes the events that preceded it seem even more perplexing. The entire time the viewer might wonder if there's an easier way to make it "work" - instead of flying to Pittsburgh, planting evidence in Times Square, forwarding packages to California, etc. - and then it becomes clear it's not as smart as it wanted to be.
