When her oddball father "Dr. J." passes away (and is cremated), he leaves his daughter Carrie (Callie Hernandez, who co-wrote the screenplay with Stephens) a patent for an "electromagnetic healing device" (which might not work) as well as a lot of debt (due to borrowing money and not being able to repay it), so she talks to various individuals her dad knew, including shop owner Tony (Tony Torn), "entrepreneur" Henri (Caveh Zahedi) and manufacturer (and religious zealot) John (Joe Swanberg). Although it's based on a true story (Callie's father was an "inventor" and appeared on television multiple times), it plays this irritating game of "what's real and what's fiction" and my reaction to it similar to Ms. Hernandez's, who looks consistently worn out and completely disengaged during her "interviews." The viewer doesn't learn much of anything about Carrie either, except that the relationship between her and her late pop was "complicated" and she's possibly going through the stages of grief ... but I know many people with severely strained relationships with one or both of their parents, and they probably wouldn't spend a minute of time doing any digging into their past.
