Read My Lips

Director: Jacques Audiard
Year Released: 2001
Rating: 3.0

Hearing-impaired secretary Carla Behm (Emmanuelle Devos) is mistreated at her place of employment (because of her disability) and overworked, so her company hires her an assistant, Paul Angeli (Vincent Cassel), who's on parole for aggravated robbery - at first, things are tense between them, but then they team up to undermine her coworkers and then rob nefarious club owner Marchand (Olivier Gourmet) that Paul owes money to.  The inspired casting of Devos and gruff Cassel helps overcome director/co-writer Audiard's somewhat meandering pacing and the fact that Carla's gift of "lip reading" is a stretch to accept considering success rates at doing that tend to be extremely low.  It also has an unexpected "feminist" slant if you think about it: early on, Paul tries to have sex with Carla in a new apartment she secures for him and she rejects him, but after he's thoroughly beaten and proven to be trustworthy, she finally accepts Paul as a lover.  Sometimes, you have to put the time in to earn actual consent.
