The Luckiest Man in America

Director: Samir Oliveros
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 0.0

Back in the eighties, career con-man Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser) drove an ice cream truck from his home state of Ohio to Los Angeles to scam his way into being a contestant on game show Press Your Luck with host Peter Tomarken (Walton Goggins), except Larson had figured out the patterns of the blinking lights in advance - and racked up over $100k in profits - which annoyed producer Bill Carruthers (David Strathairn) and other executives at CBS.  The audience is intended to find Larson a "pitiable underdog" - he's supposedly getting a divorce from his wife Patricia (Haley Bennett) and misses his daughter - but he's creepy (and has a history of scamming people), and the attempts to "generate drama" are forced.  If anything, it might have been more tolerable - and less of a waste of time - as a documentary short ... and it's certainly not as rich an experience as Redford's Quiz Show.  Also, if you want to see something deviously entertaining, look up the stand-up bit with actress Patti Harrison (who plays Janie) where she sings a song to Dua Lipa.
