Baby Invasion

Director: Harmony Korine
Year Released: 2024
Rating: 0.0

Here's another tech-inspired visual experiment - following 2023's Aggro Dr1ft - by Korine involving an unfinished game called Baby Invasion that was swiped by Romanian hackers and leaked onto the Dark Web in which players - with their characters' faces replaced by those of newborns - rob the wealthy in Florida, but the experience is supposedly so realistic it's unclear if it's "real" or a "simulation" (although there might be no difference between the two).  He must have closely examined first person shooters to try to emulate the "feeling" of those releases because, for the gamers (and Twitch users) out there, it's a pretty faithful recreation - it even has a live chat running along the left side of the screen with some truly funny comments - and is full of brain-warping effects ... except at eighty minutes long, there are stretches of it that really lag and repeat themselves.  The "unorthodox" soundtrack was provided by none other than UK producer Burial who, like the director, clearly spends a lot of time on his PlayStation.  It's a shame Chris Marker isn't around to watch this - I imagine he'd have loved where Mr. EDGLRD is taking "the cinema."
