Hell of a Summer

Director: Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 0.0

Instead of going to law school (or accepting an internship) like a reasonable 24-year-old, Jason (Fred Hechinger) decides to spend the summer at Camp Pineway to work as a counselor, arrives with some other "adults" - including Claire (Abby Quinn), Bobby (Bryk) and Chris (Wolfhard) - before the kids show up ... and then is accused of murder once individuals start getting massacred.  As Stranger Things star Wolfhard's co-directorial debut, it starts off as a Meatballs-esque 'light comedy' and then the story undergoes a shift to become a Friday the 13th replica, except it's awful as a horror movie (the Jason Voorhees movies at least tried to be unsettling) and only marginally better at half-heartedly "mocking" Gen Z for their narcissism.  To be fair, this was made in 2023 when Finn was just nineteen and it's slightly more competent than what most youngsters could put together (although he had a bit of help), but that isn't saying much.
