Astronaut Riya (Eiza González) wakes up in a space station and is stunned to find out her crew has been killed and a man named Brion (Aaron Paul) is there to lend assistance, but the oxygen levels are running low and they both need to escape. Mr. Lotus - who was born Steven Ellison - is already an accomplished musical artist so the soundtrack to this is good as are the practical effects (anyone who's seen his earlier feature Kuso knows he has a strong preference for the ghastly), except the script (which is credited to Jonni Remmler) needed quite a few rewrites, as it never bothers to explain what's happening - for example, who are these individuals, what are they doing there in the first place, etc. - and then repeatedly engages in flashbacks which only make it more incomprehensible. Since the director is a couple of years younger than me I can't help but wonder if he grew up playing the Resident Evil series or even Perfect Dark (for the Nintendo 64) which appear to be an influence ... and what is with the MedBot device that figures so prominently? Didn't the Japanese designers think of adding anesthesia to its capabilities?
