Obsession

Director: Brian De Palma
Year Released: 1976
Rating: 2.5

Businessman Michael Courtland (Cliff Robertson), who runs a successful real estate company in the Big Easy with his partner Robert LaSalle (John Lithgow), has his spouse Elizabeth (Geneviève Bujold) and only daughter kidnapped, but when he and the authorities try to rescue them, they're accidentally killed - many years later while visiting Florence, Michael meets art restorer Sandra (Bujold once again) who looks alarmingly like his first wife, and he becomes hopelessly infatuated with her, which makes Robert worried about his mental state.  This is clearly a "remix" of Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 masterpiece (starring James Stewart and Kim Novak) and even though the Master of Suspense allegedly hated it, there is a bit of cheeky fun to be had: Robertson (who was apparently difficult to work with on set) appears appropriately possessed, Bujold carries the movie as a deceptively "good natured soul" and Hitch regular Bernard Herrmann provides a classic, old school Hollywood score.  The third act is where it really turns into an unrepentant trainwreck, although the final swirling shot is a sucker punch ... take that, Electra.
