Seven Veils

Director: Atom Egoyan
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 0.0

Theatre director Jeanine (Amanda Seyfried) is busy working on a production of Richard Strauss' opera Salome (based on the play by Oscar Wilde), except the subject itself brings back unsettling memories of her late father behaving inappropriately with her (by recording her dancing suggestively) and she's also trying to emotionally deal with her separation from her husband.  Egoyan created this while collaborating with the Canadian Opera Company on his version of the tale, but despite the impressive singing by the actual cast members, this is achingly dull due to its repetitive nature and it totally lacks any form of subtlety - Jeanine's flashbacks to Bad Dad being a creep (and watching her eat fruit) are unintentionally hilarious.  Miss Amanda's a curious choice to play the lead (she previously worked with the filmmaker on 2009's Chloe) although she holds her own - it's everything else that fizzles apart around her.
